Review of the implementation of the Aged Care Royal Commission recommendations

Examining the Commonwealth’s implementation of recommendations from the Aged Care Royal Commission.

Why we are conducting the review

The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (Aged Care Royal Commission) made 148 recommendations to reform Australia's aged care system.

Under section 28 and 29 of the Inspector-General of Aged Care Act 2023, the Inspector-General of Aged Care (Inspector-General) must conduct 2 progress reports and 2 reviews of the Commonwealth’s implementation of each of the 148 recommendations.

The progress reports were completed in June 2024 and June 2025.

What the review will look at

The review will assess whether the Australian Government’s aged care reforms are likely to deliver the intended outcomes of the Aged Care Royal Commission.

It will consider whether the reforms are appropriate, effective and publicly accountable to achieve the intended outcomes of the royal commission, and if more work is needed.

Timeframes

The review will be completed and provided to the Minister for Aged Care and Seniors by 1 November 2027. The Minister must table the report in each House of the Parliament within 15 sitting days after the review is provided to them.

The report will be published on our website after it is provided to the Minister and tabled in Parliament.
